Summer Feast in the Field at Oak Spring
Please join us for a special evening as we celebrate the beginning of summer at the Biocultural Conservation Farm!
The Oak Spring Garden Foundation cordially invites you to join us in the vegetable fields at the Biocultural Conservation Farm (BCCF) to celebrate the dawn of summer! Guests will stroll through the BCCF’s production field while enjoying light bites and drinks, including a signature summer-inspired cocktail. The cocktail hour will be followed by a family-style dinner prepared by OSGF’s Chef Jason Neve and will highlight a diverse medley of summer crops grown at the BCCF.
All proceeds from the event will go towards OSGF’s Education + Outreach programs in the local community – please read more about these programs below.
About the BCCF: The Biocultural Conservation Farm (BCCF) at the Oak Spring Garden Foundation was started in the spring of 2019. The BCCF grows fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs for use by Chef Jason Neve for onsite programs, providing fresh food to OSGF’s visiting artists and scholars-in-residence, and a 24-week 50 member CSA. Additionally, the BCCF is committed to donating at least 50% of produce grown to local food banks and pantries, and has donated more than 140,000 lbs to date. The BCCF’s mission is also deeply rooted in highlighting heirlooms that are culturally and historically important to the Appalachian and VA Piedmont regions and saving their seeds for preservation and sharing in the community.
The evening will feature live music by Lillian Hacket, joined by Evan Bell. With roots nestled deep in the Appalachian hills, Lillian is a rising voice in Folk and Americana, weaving the rich threads of old-time and bluegrass traditions into a tapestry of heartfelt melodies and lyrical storytelling.
Dinner guests are invited to participate in an optional Silent Auction during the cocktail hour in the production field. Auction items will include various experiences offered by OSGF as well as unique takeaway items. The auction will close in-person promptly after the cocktail hour the night of the dinner (Friday, June 6). Guests will receive information on how to join the Silent Auction in a separate correspondence.
Kindly note that due to the nature of this event, we are unable to accommodate dietary restrictions or preferences. This meal may contain dairy, eggs, gluten, and nuts. Additionally, this event will take place at the BCCF on Rokeby Farm and will not include a visit to OSGF’s formal gardens
Flower House Detroit at Oak Spring Garden
Overview: In October 2015, 37 floral designers and over 100 volunteers from across North America came together to fill an abandoned Detroit house with American-grown fresh flowers and living plants. An estimated 3,400 curious visitors explored the house over the 3-day exhibition, and the installation hosted 3 weddings and dinner for 180 people. The project received international media attention—with an estimated 287,000,000+ media impressions in just the first month alone.
Why did this project touch so many people? In this lecture, botanical installation artist Lisa Waud describes her extraordinary project from idea to exhibition, discussing what about the installation was so magnetic to so many people across the world—exploring her thoughts on beauty, blight, and nostalgia, and the themes of risk-taking, logistics, and collaboration through the lens of the large-scale installation.
To mark the 10 year anniversary of the project this year, Lisa updated her presentation with perspective of time and her experiences since, folding together stunning images, moving videos, and audience participation.
The presentation will be held in the Granary, and light refreshments will be provided.

June Garden and Gallery Tours at Oak Spring
The Oak Spring Garden Foundation is a legacy of the designer, horticulturalist and philanthropist Rachel Lambert “Bunny” Mellon. Mrs. Mellon’s hope was that her extensive collection of rare books, artwork, and other materials relating to plants, gardens, and landscapes could continue to be used for education and inspiration.
Come be inspired by her formal walled garden and bask in the shade of the Mary Potter crabapple arbor as you take a self-paced walking tour through the marvelous landscape in Upperville, Virginia. Selections from “Fantastic Flora” a digital educational exhibit that blends art, culture, history, and science to explore the role of plants in both human history and the natural world will be featured.
On view in the Gallery will be our latest exhibition “The Final Resting Place Of President John F. Kennedy: The Untold Story Of A Lost Memorial.” The exhibition celebrates the discovery of a poignant but never fully implemented memorial for the gravesite of President John F. Kennedy, designed by Jean Schlumberger, then at Tiffany & Co., with support from Rachel ‘Bunny’ Lambert Mellon at the request of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. The exhibition celebrates these friendships using archival material from the Oak Spring Garden Library and features art from Sara Lindsay, an alumna of the Oak Spring Garden Foundation Artist in Residency Program.
